Overview
What is this condition?
The scrotum contains the testicles, the epididymis and their supporting structures. Lumps can arise from any of these — as well as from the skin.
Assessment combines a careful examination with a scrotal ultrasound, and in most cases provides a clear diagnosis at a single visit.

What can cause it
Hydrocele
Fluid around the testicle — usually painless and benign.
Epididymal cyst
Very common benign cysts above the testicle.
Varicocele
Enlarged veins — 'bag of worms' feel above the testicle.
Epididymo-orchitis
Infection or inflammation.
Testicular cancer
Uncommon overall but the most common cancer in young men — highly treatable when caught early.

- Sudden severe testicular pain (possible torsion — an emergency)
- A new, firm, painless lump within the testicle
- Rapid enlargement of a testicle
- Testicular pain with fever
- Unexplained weight loss or lump in the abdomen alongside a scrotal lump
