Condition

Overactive bladder

Overactive bladder is a common, treatable condition that significantly affects quality of life. A structured, stepwise approach usually restores confident bladder control.

Overview

What is this condition?

Overactive bladder is a symptom syndrome of urinary urgency, usually with frequency and nocturia — with or without leakage.

It affects both men and women and is not simply 'part of getting older'. A range of treatments — from behavioural to advanced — can help.

Common symptoms

Symptoms to be aware of

Symptoms vary from person to person. Specialist assessment helps determine the underlying cause.

  • Sudden urgent need to pass urine

  • Frequency more than 8 times a day

  • Waking at night to urinate

  • Urge leakage

  • Always locating the nearest toilet

  • Impact on sleep, work and social life

Possible causes

What can cause it

  • Bladder-brain signalling

The bladder contracts inappropriately during filling.

  • Urinary infection

    Should always be excluded first.

  • Bladder irritants

Caffeine, alcohol, artificial sweeteners can worsen symptoms.

  • Neurological conditions

MS, Parkinson's and stroke can affect bladder function.

  • Postmenopausal changes

Hormonal changes may contribute in women.

Many causes are benign and highly treatable. A structured consultant-led assessment is the fastest way to reach a clear diagnosis and a personalised plan.

When to seek medical advice

Some symptoms should always prompt prompt specialist review. Please seek urgent medical advice — through your GP, NHS 111 or A&E — if you notice any of the following.

  • Blood in the urine
  • New pelvic or bladder pain
  • New neurological symptoms
  • Recurrent urinary infections
  • Rapid deterioration in symptoms

Diagnosis

How the diagnosis is made

Diagnosis follows a clear, patient-centred pathway — often completed within one or two visits.

  1. 01

    Medical history

    Symptom pattern, triggers and impact.

  2. 02

    Bladder diary

A 3-day diary of intake and voiding is highly informative.

  3. 03

    Urine tests

    To exclude infection and blood.

  4. 04

    Bladder scan

Post-void residual to confirm complete emptying.

  5. 05

    Urodynamics

In selected patients before advanced treatment.

  6. 06

    Cystoscopy

Where appropriate, to exclude structural causes.
