Condition

Male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)

Urinary symptoms in men are common, treatable and rarely trivial. A proper assessment identifies the underlying cause and matches it with the right, personalised treatment.

Overview

What is this condition?

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is a term for a group of urinary symptoms — including storage symptoms (urgency, frequency, nocturia) and voiding symptoms (weak stream, hesitancy, dribbling).

The most common cause in men over 50 is prostate enlargement, but overactive bladder, urethral narrowing and other conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Common symptoms

Symptoms to be aware of

Symptoms vary from person to person. Specialist assessment helps determine the underlying cause.

  • Weak or slow stream

  • Waking at night to pass urine

  • Urgency to pass urine

  • Frequency during the day

  • Difficulty starting

  • Dribbling after finishing

Possible causes

What can cause it

  • Prostate enlargement (BPH)

The most common cause in older men.

  • Overactive bladder

A common contributor, particularly to storage symptoms.

  • Urethral stricture

A narrowing of the urethra can cause weak flow.

  • Prostate cancer

    Uncommon presentation but always considered.

  • Chronic prostatitis

Can cause discomfort and irritative symptoms.

Many causes are benign and highly treatable. A structured consultant-led assessment is the fastest way to reach a clear diagnosis and a personalised plan.

When to seek medical advice

Some symptoms should always prompt prompt specialist review. Please seek urgent medical advice — through your GP, NHS 111 or A&E — if you notice any of the following.

  • Inability to pass urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Bone pain with LUTS
  • Rapidly worsening symptoms
  • Recurrent urinary infections
