Condition

Penile conditions

Penile conditions can be worrying and are often left undiscussed. A discreet, unhurried consultant assessment provides clarity, reassurance and a clear plan.

Overview

What is this condition?

This includes conditions such as Peyronie's disease, penile skin lesions, tight frenulum, recurrent balanitis and premalignant skin changes.

Early specialist review is the best way to reach a confident diagnosis and to identify the small minority of conditions that need urgent treatment.

Common symptoms

Symptoms to be aware of

Symptoms vary from person to person. Specialist assessment helps determine the underlying cause.

  • A lump, patch or skin change

  • Pain with erection or intercourse

  • Curvature of the penis

  • Redness, soreness or discharge

  • Bleeding from the penis or urethra

  • Difficulty retracting the foreskin

Possible causes

What can cause it

  • Peyronie's disease

Scar tissue in the penis causing curvature and sometimes pain.

  • Balanitis

Inflammation, often infective, of the glans.

  • Skin conditions

Lichen sclerosus, eczema and psoriasis can affect the penis.

  • Premalignant and malignant lesions

Rare — but early expert assessment is essential.

  • Tight frenulum

Painful tightness of the band underneath the foreskin.

Many causes are benign and highly treatable. A structured consultant-led assessment is the fastest way to reach a clear diagnosis and a personalised plan.

When to seek medical advice

Some symptoms should always prompt prompt specialist review. Please seek urgent medical advice — through your GP, NHS 111 or A&E — if you notice any of the following.

  • A new, non-healing ulcer or lump
  • Rapid change in an existing skin lesion
  • Persistent bleeding
  • Groin swelling with a penile lesion
  • Severe pain with erection
