Condition

Prostate enlargement (BPH)

Prostate enlargement is very common as men get older and highly treatable. Modern options mean most men can significantly improve their urinary symptoms and quality of life.

Overview

What is this condition?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that can obstruct urinary flow.

It is one of the most common conditions we see in men over 50, and the range of modern treatments has expanded dramatically — from tablets to precise, tissue-preserving minimally invasive surgery.

Common symptoms

Symptoms to be aware of

Symptoms vary from person to person. Specialist assessment helps determine the underlying cause.

  • Weak urinary stream

  • Waking at night to urinate

  • Urinary urgency

  • Hesitancy starting

  • Feeling of incomplete emptying

  • Post-void dribbling

Possible causes

What can cause it

  • Age-related growth

The prostate naturally enlarges with age, driven partly by hormonal changes.

  • Family history

A family history of BPH increases your likelihood.

  • Cardiometabolic factors

Diabetes and cardiovascular disease can influence prostate growth and symptoms.

Many causes are benign and highly treatable. A structured consultant-led assessment is the fastest way to reach a clear diagnosis and a personalised plan.

When to seek medical advice

Some symptoms should always prompt prompt specialist review. Please seek urgent medical advice — through your GP, NHS 111 or A&E — if you notice any of the following.

  • Inability to pass urine (acute urinary retention)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Recurrent urinary infections
  • New kidney impairment
  • Bladder stones

Diagnosis

How the diagnosis is made

Diagnosis follows a clear, patient-centred pathway — often completed within one or two visits.

  1. 01

    Medical history

Detailed symptom score (IPSS) and quality-of-life assessment.

  2. 02

    Examination

    Abdominal and prostate examination.

  3. 03

    Urine tests

To exclude infection and check for blood.

  4. 04

    Blood tests

Kidney function and PSA where appropriate.

  5. 05

    Flow rate and residual

Measures the strength of your stream and how well the bladder empties.

  6. 06

    Imaging or cystoscopy

Ultrasound or flexible cystoscopy where indicated.
