Vasectomy: What to Expect from the No-Scalpel Technique
No-scalpel vasectomy is a safe, effective and permanent form of contraception performed under local anaesthetic. This guide explains what to expect before, during and after the procedure.

The procedure
Vasectomy is performed under local anaesthetic in around 20 minutes. A small opening is made in the scrotal skin, through which the vas deferens on each side is divided.
Recovery
Mild discomfort and bruising are normal for a few days. Simple analgesia, supportive underwear and rest are usually all that is needed.
Confirmation
A semen sample is checked at around 12 weeks to confirm the procedure has been successful. Other contraception is required until clearance is confirmed.
