What is PSA?

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate. Levels can rise in prostate cancer, but also in benign enlargement, infection, urinary retention or recent instrumentation.

The modern pathway

A raised PSA is typically confirmed on a repeat test, followed by multiparametric MRI. If the MRI shows a suspicious area, a targeted biopsy is offered; if the MRI is reassuring, biopsy may be avoided altogether.
