What is BPH?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) describes non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. As the prostate grows, it can restrict flow through the urethra and cause lower urinary tract symptoms.
Typical symptoms
Symptoms are typically grouped into two categories.
- Storage symptoms: frequency, urgency, nocturia
- Voiding symptoms: hesitancy, weak stream, incomplete emptying
Treatment options
Treatment is chosen after a full assessment including flow tests, ultrasound and a discussion about how symptoms affect your quality of life.
- Lifestyle advice and bladder training
- Medical therapy (alpha blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors)
- Minimally invasive procedures (Rezum, Urolift, prostatic artery embolisation)
- Surgical options (TURP, HoLEP, aquablation)
